For us, the little town of Chelva is one of our top places to visit not just in Valencia but the whole of Spain for some wonderful outdoor hiking.
Start in the centre of town and follow the signs of La Ruta del Agua, also download the route from the town’s website as the signs are a bit sporadic at the start.
If in doubt, follow the sound of water, even in the height of summer there is a constant flow of water all around the town, and the ubiquitous fountains mark the way.
Descending into the valley you’ll get into nature, with a hike along the Rio Chelva river and its many cool pools, the ultimate bathing spot is La Playeta
Heading above the river and along the canyon you’ll come to the Olinches tunnel, 100m long, with low ceilings to crawl through that brings a bit of adventure to the route.
Heading back along the route under the town the hike becomes a bit more sedate with a tree lined walk
until you start to head to la Luz with a climb that delivers a picture perfect mirador
as well as views of the surrounding cliff caves
Hike back up to the centre of the town through groves of cacti
and past little ermitas
until back at the Plaza Major for a well earned drink and snack!
The second half of the day should be dedicated to heading out along a dusty gravel road to the Peña Cortada, a two millennia old Roman aqueduct set in a remote canyon that you’ll have all to yourselves.
Make your way across the narrow pass
and you’ll be rewarded with yet more adventure to follow the watercourse of the ancient Roman waterway, through cracks in the mountains
along winding tunnels
with panoramic views into the valley below
Returning gingerly across the aqueduct to finish a wonderful day of hiking….enjoy!
